Something that is finished and measuring in at 5 x 6in this painting is oil, varnish and collaged card on canvas. Think it was a model for a bigger painting if I was lucky to get a big space to make it happen. If I remember correctly, the cardboard used here which i went on to paint on was packaging from China and had a different feel to the usual stuff and felt quite exotic, this is odd considering cardboard is quite a mundane and common product.
I remember painting gloss and oil marks on piles of the stuff which i later cut up and vowed to use in paintings. I did with this painting. New discoveries can be old discoveries rediscovered.

'....with the sense that the vocabulary of picture making is being thrown up into the air and deconstructed into a grammar of parts which settle into place momentarily. That's what's so thrilling about them: them moment you look at something, it goes on a journey. It can settle for a moment but then moves on. They're about transformation, poetic metaphor, an articulation of the creative process. A line settles on the profile of a bust and then moves off it and becomes a free line, just an arabesque. And the way he used white in the paintings; there are bits of white that describe illusionistically and bits of white that float free like abstract moments in time. One minute the bird settles on an easel, the next minute its a myriad of fragments. Or there is a painting thats been abandoned, as if the parts have been exploded or been given up on. There's the sense of something in continual change. The journey through the picture is like a conversation between something which is described and something which is imagined. The dislocation of time and space present in Braque's works is to me fundemental in the construction of an elastic language.'

Charcoals are from 2004 when I didn't have a studio or settled space to work in. I dug these out because I like the way they are urgent investigations of space with the physicality of the charcoal being manipulated on the surface of the paper.

Nice to see a big Albert Irvin on the stairs at Homerton Hospital on the way to the gleaming maternity wards. Don't know why but seems appropriate and right ! Think its from the 90s. Plenty of other interesting work spread across the hospital corridor walls too.

Just thought I'd put these pictures up, with most of them in an unfinished state. I'm not worried about the poor quality of the photos, its handy to have a general idea of these Gouaches on watercolour paper before they all potentially go off in different directions, or just get spoiled.

Continuing with the stencilling thing but trying to move away from the 'stabilisers' ; i find gouache has a dry, charcoal-ly texture and some colours in the tube are in different states than others

With the demands of space , once again I find it a real dilemma to keep or chuck old work. Perception of whether things have value always changes. So I have compromised, and documented some chosen drawings, based on a transcription of Las Meninas by Velasquez from 1995/96. I still haven't been to Madrid to see the original yet.. maybe next year!

Both red paintings, acrylic, gloss and oil on canvas. After creating a structured image I wanted to go against the white angular areas with more free associated areas of brushstrokes. Having got old sketchbooks out recently I referred to a number of pencil drawings looking for a sense of movement but trying to achieve a non specificity that was in the mark-making. I had paint already mixed up from the grey painting, some were dark tones, so this decided what I used. I retained some areas by masking but not as many. Just like a memory, with some things fading but important things remaining.

Painting the chequered pattern was quite a laborious exercise taking time to fill in the squares and I was also doubtful whether it was right to do this. I wanted a decorative part where the 'tray' shapes meet to go against the physical aspect of the surrounding painted surface. I've since washed the squared areas, bleeding the colours into the grey white and black areas, thus hopefully keeping the work alive still.

Just had a chucking out session which happens now and again but not ruthless and often enough to keep the daily onslaught of clutter at bay. Todays postings from an old sketchbook, probably around 2000, when I lived in Norwich for a bit. No dates, notes, titles - they are something and nothing. I quite like some of these sketchbook ideas, automatic drawings, beginnings of things, gestural, a bit R MacIntosh in a couple. Whether any blossom into the form of a painting or not they are nevertheless here in this virtual space, and I can be more ruthless in my trashing session next time..

Above paintings now on show at Majestic Wine Warehouse on 201-207 Shoreditch High Street, London, E1 6LG , for an indeterminate period. The paintings were based on the various sizes found in bottle packaging.
